China and Maldives: A Decade of Friendship Towards One Shared Future.
On October 31, 2024, a significant milestone in China-Maldives relations was celebrated at the symposium, “China and Maldives: A Decade of Friendship Towards One Shared Future.” Jointly organized by the Chinese Embassy in the Maldives and the Maldives China Trade & Cultural Organization (MCTCO), the event brought together prominent leaders and experts to reflect on the progress of bilateral relations and chart a vision for the future.
The symposium welcomed a distinguished array of participants, including Ambassador Wang Lixin, Ms. Sheryna Abdul Samad, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Abdulla Siyaz, Minister of State for Economic Development & Trade, senior officials from the Ministries of Tourism and Construction, Members of Parliament, scholars, and representatives from Chinese enterprises operating in the Maldives.
A Decade of Progress
Ambassador Wang Lixin highlighted the symposium's significance by framing it within the broader context of a flourishing decade-long partnership. This year marks ten years since Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the Maldives, an event that laid the foundation for the unprecedented growth in relations between the two nations. Ambassador Wang also acknowledged the successful state visit of Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to China earlier this year, which elevated bilateral relations to a new level.
Reflecting on the past decade, Ambassador Wang emphasized key pillars of this partnership:
Strategic Guidance: High-level exchanges between the heads of state have provided unwavering direction for sustained progress.
Political Trust: Strong mutual trust has underpinned the deepening of cooperation.
Belt and Road Cooperation: Joint efforts under this initiative have acted as a catalyst for development.
People-to-People Ties: Cultural exchanges have fostered goodwill and enduring friendship.
Ambassador Wang reiterated China's commitment to work with the Maldives in implementing the consensus reached by the two leaders, with a focus on enhancing high-level exchanges, expanding cooperation in infrastructure, trade, and tourism, and promoting sustainable development.
Maldivian Perspectives
Maldivian speakers echoed similar sentiments, recognizing the transformational impact of China’s support on the nation’s development. Ms. Sheryna Abdul Samad, Mr. Abdulla Siyaz, and Members of Parliament Mr. Abdulla Rifau and Mr. Imran Latheef celebrated the role of the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge and other critical infrastructure projects in improving living standards and driving economic growth.
Experts like environmental economist Dr. Simad Saeed and Mr. Asad Ali, Deputy Secretary General of the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI), emphasized the broader opportunities presented by China's remarkable modernization. They urged for further collaboration in fields such as green energy, education, and sustainable tourism, ensuring that the Maldives leverages Chinese expertise to achieve its development goals.
Speaking as Vice President of MCTCO, Mr. Midhuam Saud highlighted how China’s commitment to mutual development has created avenues for both nations to flourish together. He stressed the importance of deepening ties in emerging sectors such as science, technology, and renewable energy to build a more resilient Maldives.
Towards a Shared Future
The symposium underscored the shared commitment of both nations to strengthen their relationship. By focusing on sustainable development, expanding economic cooperation, and fostering mutual understanding, the partnership between China and the Maldives continues to serve as a model of international friendship.
As the Maldives and China celebrate this milestone and look toward the next decade, the shared vision of a prosperous, sustainable future resonates stronger than ever, promising boundless opportunities for both nations.
